Dispute over the Diaoyu Islands has aroused national consciousness among the younger generation of Hong Kong and nearly 45 per cent of the young respondents said they had a stronger sense that Chinese must be united after the Diaoyu conflict emerged. Another 18 per cent hope that China will become stronger. The poll also shows that the vast majority of the youngsters have discussed the issue with friends or parents and more than 40 per cent have participated in different kinds of activity in defending the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands. Most of them participated in sign-up campaigns, boycotting Japanese products and giving donations to concerned groups. Yet 37 per cent disagreed any demonstrations in front of Japanese schools and companies in Hong Kong and 80 per cent said they would not be unfriendly to Japanese people because of the dispute. This survey also shows that one in every ten respondents did not know about the historical background of the Diaoyu conflict.
