Teaching with Mother Language
A Study into Parents' and Students' Attitudes

The road for teaching with mother language in Hong Kong has been zigzagged for a long time. The Education Department has recently decided to implement teaching with mother language starting in 1998 school year. This has stirred up much debate. Will the standard of English be lowered by teaching with mother language so that educational opportunities and job competitiveness of young people will be jeopardized? Are there any solutions which can address the worries of parents? Can schools maintain their quality of teaching after the change? How can resources be coordinated to produce qualified teachers within the time frame? Through an opinion survey of parents and students and in-depth interviews with various relevant actors, such as school principals, educators in school of education, linguistic experts or teachers, we hope to improve our understanding of different people's views, which will lead to suitable services
