“Enhancing Support for e-Learning in Schools”

The Youth I.D.E.A.S. (established by HKFYG Youth Research Centre) has released its study on “Enhancing Support for e-Learning in Schools”.

Data gathered from 1,039 Hong Kong youth aged 12-19 showed that the biggest challenge they faced during e-learning is the lack of learning atmosphere(60.4%), followed by difficulties to stay concentrated (56.7%) and affect effectiveness of learning (46.8%).

Data gathered from 122 schools showed 29.5% agreed that teachers have difficulties in using e-learning tools for teaching.

When it comes to e-learning, school respondents thought that the most important point is to improve the self-directed learning of students(69.7%)and more training(69.7%)for teachers. Experts from the educator sectors pointed out that teachers’ training can allow teachers to be well equipped with the skills of using e-learning tools and using appropriate pedagogy to raise students’ learning interest and engagement, hence improve self-directed learning of students.

The study recommended the Education Bureau to set up a task force and start planning on The Fifth Strategy on IT in Education (ITE5). The study also suggested the Education Bureau to reduce teachers’ lesson period so as to allow more time to enhance teachers’ training. Another suggestion is adding IT coordinator post in schools.
