“Navigating Career Opportunities for Young People”

The Youth I.D.E.A.S. (established by HKFYG Youth Research Centre) has released its study on “Navigating Career Opportunities for Young People”.

Data gathered from 520 Hong Kong young employees aged 18-34 showed that 72.5% of them mainly considered the factor of salary in job hunting. Most respondents paid attention to the business nature (59.8%) and company size (36.9%) when choosing companies, while 70.0% said company background was not an important factor.

Interviewees from in-depth interviews generally thought that Chinese enterprises can provide a broader range of work experience and more mainland related opportunities. But problems in the long-term promotion prospect, the training mechanism and the adaptation in enterprise culture may discourage them from staying in the enterprise.

The study recommended that young people should maintain their unique competitiveness by broadening their international horizons and enhancing their cultural knowledge of the east and the west. They should also try to understand the background and culture of different kinds of enterprises. Chinese enterprises may consider to launch trainee programs with job rotation which would facilitate the better use of talents and to retain them.
