"Connecting Young People with Countryside Conservation" Press Briefing
Countryside areas possess precious natural resources and cultural heritage. Conserving countryside could promote the quality of life, as well as contribute to sustainability development of society. It requires everyone’s efforts. Hong Kong has long been considered a bustling city. With the increasing attention on sustainable urban-rural development and with the rising popularity of post-pandemic in-depth local cultural travel, previously less well-visited rural areas have recently become more attractive for people to explore, among the visitors are youth.
The Youth Development and Engagement group of the Youth I.D.E.A.S. released a research report on “Connecting Young People with Countryside Conservation”. The results revealed that a very outstanding proportion of the surveyed youth believe countryside conservation is important for urban-rural sustainable development of Hong Kong (90.8%), or provides an alternative for youth engagement in society (83.0%).
To conduct this study, data was collected between January and April 2025 through an online survey of 534 young people (aged 15 to 34); case interviews with 15 individuals; and one-to-one interviews with 5 experts and academics.
