Overcoming Career Challenges of Hong Kong Young People in the Greater Bay Area

The Youth I.D.E.A.S. (established by HKFYG Youth Research Centre) has released its study on “Overcoming Career Challenges of Hong Kong Young People in the Greater Bay Area”.

Data gathered from 522 Hong Kong working youth aged 18-39 showed that 92.1% have heard about the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” or the “Greater Bay Area”. 73.4%, 71.3%% and 64.4% thought that the construction of the Greater Bay Area is helpful in “the overall economy of Hong Kong”, “the career opportunities of Hong Kong young people”, and “the international competitiveness of Hong Kong” respectively.

Some young people who are developing their career in Guangdong said that the consistency in policy is the key to start or to continue their business in Guangdong. In addition, the complicated business procedures, unclear business information, the complicated procedures in money transfer, and the high tax rates are other discouraging factors in working in Guangdong.

The study recommended to set up a Greater Bay Area Coordination Bureau to take charge of coordination between Hong Kong, Macau and the 9 Guangdong cities. It also recommended that Hong Kong young people should pay their income tax to the mainland government according to Hong Kong tax rates if they can meet certain requirements.
